The 32-year-old British-American actress plays Emily and is also a producer for the new series. She said that she listened to viewers’ concerns, likes, and concerns’ about 2020 drama and then focused on addressing them.

She concluded, reporting The Guardian, that “Hiring new people in front the camera, and also giving new storylines different characters was really important.”

Following its debut last year, the binge-worthy Netflix series came under fire from critics for its ‘outdated and stereotypical’ portrayal of French people.

The series follows Emily, played in part by Lily. She moves from Chicago to begin a new job at a French-based marketing company. Parisians are not patient with the bubbly American. 

Based on stereotypes of the French, the characters are depicted as uncivilized and unfriendly towards foreigners, who don’t know the language.

Many people took to Twitter to complain about Emily in Paris’s portrayal of all French people as rude, unfaithful and take pride in being inappropriate and incongruous.

Lily acknowledged to Vogue Arabia that although it was disheartening to read the negative press surrounding the series she sees it as a positive because it gives her the chance to improve the future.

She said: ‘As disheartening as it sometimes is to read these things, it’s also a gift; you’re being allowed to improve.’

Lily stated to the publication that she would ‘evolve’ the narrative if another series is ordered. She also said that producers: ‘Championed me in my opinions and opened my eyes to an experience so rewarding and empowering.

The second season focuses on Emily’s fallout with Gabriel, her French chef neighbour (played by Lucas Bravo), who is still possibly in a relationship with Camille Razat (Camille Razat). 

Some viewers compared this with Sex and the City’s Carrie, Sarah Jessica Parker) getting together with the married Mr. Big. 

The second series, Emily in Paris, is due to be released in December.
