After his neighbors complained about his late-night DIY, a man drilled 5cm into the skull of his neighbor. He was sentenced to four and a quarter years in prison.
Police were called at Harlow, Essex, around 1pm on Aug 3rd last year to investigate reports that a man had been attacked using an electric drill.
Officers arrived and found Eddie Achunche, 45 years old, still holding the drill in one hand.
Achunche had attacked the victim following a confrontation over late-night drilling that had kept residents on the streets awake the previous night.
Witnesses described the scene before Achunche stood over the victim with the drill.
The victim, a man in his thirties, suffered serious injuries to his face and head. Doctors discovered that the drill had penetrated his brain by 5cm.
He suffered a brain bleed and now has significant weakness in his right upper and lower limbs, as well as double vision in the left eye and brain damage. This has led to memory and cognitive problems.
Achunche claimed he was acting out of self defense and wasn’t trying to hurt anyone. However, he was arrested.
After a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court he was found guilty for causing grievous bodily injury without intent, but he was cleared of the more serious offense of GBH with intent.
He was sentenced to four years and six month in prison by the same court on Friday 22 October.
Detective Constable Alana McCreath from Harlow CID stated that the victim sustained life-altering injuries after the attack.
Achunche, 45 years old, was sentenced to four and a quarter years in prison at Chelmsford Crown Court (pictured).
It is impossible to use a power drill against someone else, but Eddie Achunche did it.
Achunche’s actions will have a lasting impact on the victim’s life.
‘Achunche did not show any remorse for his actions, and instead tried to convince officers that he was only acting in self-defense.
“Fortunately, we, the jury, were capable of seeing through this, and he will now spend most of the foreseeable future behind bars.
“I want you to recognize the courage of the victim, and the support that his family has given him.
“He will have to deal with the consequences of Achunche’s actions for the rest his life. He has shown incredible courage throughout the investigation, court process, and trial.
