  • Private aircraft collided with a waterfall near Caratinga, a small rural community outside of Caratinga
  • Mendonça’s producer, Henrique Ribeiro, her uncle and advisor Abicieli Silveira Dias were also killed, the Military Fire Department of Minas Gerais confirmed
  • Both the pilot and copilot (whose identities have not been revealed) also perished. 










Award-winning Brazilian singer Marília Mendonça was killed in a plane crash along with four others after the private jet carrying the star, her producer and her uncle  went down near a waterfall in southeastern Brazil on Friday.

Just an hour before the deadly crash, Mendonça uploaded a video to Twitter and Instagram that showed her pulling her suitcase and carrying her guitar before she boarded the flight. 

Mendonça, 26, was on her way to a concert in the Minas Gerais city of Caratinga when the private aircraft crashed.

Mendonça, who won a Latin Grammy Award in 2019, leaves behind one-year-old son named Léo.

The other two victims of her crash were her producer Henrique Rbeiro, as well her uncle Abicieli Sulva Dias, who was also her advisor. Names of pilot and copilot are not known.

Their deaths were confirmed by the Military Fire Department of Minas Gerais.

The Military Fire Department of Minas Gerais said all five passengers were found dead inside the aircraft

According to Minas Gerais’ Military Fire Department, all five of the passengers had been found inside the plane. 

Mendonça’s final video shows her eating from a food tray and her workout regimen.

“This is reality, my people!” “This is the reality my people!” she wrote. “Tell us here, Minas Gerais.

The twin-engine Beech Aircraft took off from Goiânia and was headed to Caratinga when it crashed around 3:30 local time.

Mendonça was set to perform with the duo Douglas and Vinicius at Exhibition Park.

“My God. Anitta from Brazil tweeted, “I just found out.” “I cannot believe it. It is my desire to believe there is hope.

Neymar of Brazil wrote, “I refuse to believe. I refuse,” on Twitter.

Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents is currently investigating the incident.

The small plane was manufactured in 1984 in the United States and was in good standing, the National Civil Aviation Agency reported.

As a 12-year old, the country music singer started composing her own music. In 2014, she debuted and her first EP was released in 2015. She followed it up with a live album, Marília Mendonça: Ao Vivo, in 2016 which went triple platinum. 

Infiel was the album’s fifth most-played song in Brazil that year.

Mendonça was honored in 2019 with the Latin Grammy Award for Best Sertaneja Music Album for her live project, Todos os Cantos.

She was also known as the ‘queen of suffering’ due to her lyrics over relationships that did not work out.

According to Spotify, Mendonça was the most listened to artist in Brazil in 2019 and 2020.

‘It is with immense regret that we mourn the death of the singer Marília Mendonça, the entire crew and passengers,’ the Ministry of Culture said in a statement. She is a prolific composer of hit country songs. Marília Mendonça leaves a legacy for Brazilian regional music and Brazilian culture. This will not go unnoticed. (We offer) condolences for family members and friends. You are the’singer’ of this world, rest in peace.
