Campaigners fear that Qatar authorities have taken a woman’s rights activist who returned from exile in the UK into custody.

  • She has not heard from her since October 13, after she returned to Doha weeks earlier.
  • Ms. al-Maadeed sought asylum to escape domestic abuse. 










Campaigners fear authorities in Qatar are holding women’s rights activist Noof al-Maadeed after she returned to the country from exile in the UK.

To escape domestic abuse, the 23-year-old sought asylum in Britain in 2019. 

She has not been heard of since October 13th, after she returned to Doha three week ago, following assurances that she would be safe.

Rothna Begum, senior women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch, said: ‘The authorities have hinted that she may be being detained for her own protection and it is her own choice.’
