The New York location of a well-respected chain of British steak restaurants has been a hit. It received rave reviews. 

Hawksmoor is a famous restaurant that has nine London-based steakhouses. It has been receiving a warm reception ever since its September opening.

The price ranges from the $16 potted steak to the $65 rib eye charcoal grilled steak. East coast Halibut is $40. 

While the New York Post said it had ‘a lively bar scene and decadent menu’, food critic for The New York Times Pete Wells also gave the restaurant a raving review. 

Brad Japhe, writing for Forbes, described the restaurant as one of New York’s top restaurants this winter and called it a “mecca” for meat-lovers.

The New York Post stated that the restaurant had “a vibrant bar scene and decadent food menu”, but Pete Wells, a New York Times food critic gave it a rave review.

In 2006, the first Hawksmoor Steakhouse was opened in East London. It quickly gained popularity in the capital. 

Website states that co-founders Will Beckett & Huw Gott set out to achieve’simple, three-fold goals: Find the highest quality beef possible; learn the art of making the perfect steak; create an atmosphere where guests, staff and employees can relax and have fun.

In the meantime, nine branches have been opened by the company including one in Manchester.

The first stateside restaurant was originally set to open in spring 2020 but the pandemic pushed back the opening date to September 2021.

It’s located in the Assembly Room of the United Charities Building, which has 26-foot-high ceilings, stained glass windows and magnificent archways.  

Co-founder Will said the pandemic brought ‘tears and incredulity’ from the opening team.

He described how he and childhood friend turned business partner Huw how he hopes the restaurant industry will recover.

Eater reported that he had expressed his love for the industry and the restaurants in it, as well as for the communities where he operates. However, these passions have greatly diminished.

“It is possible to rebuild it all better and we want a role in that.”

Meanwhile he also explained how the restaurant focuses on on ethical farming, saying: ‘We believe in farming methods that honor natural systems, increase biodiversity, and regenerate the land.’  

Big Hospitality interviewed him to say that opening a New York-based restaurant was his dream as well as a true privilege.  

Wells stated in The New York Times that the rump steak was a good choice because it has a rich flavor and is affordable for the price of a little bit of chewing.

He described the sirloin at the same time as the filet as being ‘nearly the tender,’ and that it tasted like the “hard-edge minerality” of the rump. 

But he claimed that it was unlike any New York steakhouse. 

Forbes ranked the restaurant as “The 15 Best Places to Eat Drink And Stay in New York City” during winter.

It was described as “the latest jewel of the rapidly expanding Flatiron dining scene”.

The restaurant has received rave reviews from not only critics, but diners have also left glowing online reviews.

One TripAdvisor user commented that it was “every bit like London”. He wrote: We visited the London Hawksmoors a lot more than we should and have missed it so much since moving to New York.

“This spot has the same vibe, atmosphere and, above all, damn good steak. They have a great staff and the location is beautiful. It’s very appropriate for the brand. Londoners! Come to this place for a little reminder of your roots.

It's not just the critics who have been left raving over the restaurant, with diners also sharing positive reviews on TripAdvisor

The restaurant has been praised by many people, including critics. Diners have also left glowing reviews on TripAdvisor. 

“They have missing mushrooms, but they’ll be back every so often to check if it changes.”

One other wrote, “We were thrilled to try the NYC location because we had visited the Seven Dials restaurant and Spitalfields during our travels.

“The Hawksmoor interior is beautiful and exudes a clubby, old-world feel. It can be found in the old United Charities Building. 

“We loved the steak tartare and ash-baked beets as well as the ribeye (10 oz. The East coast filet is also available. Sides- spinach,lemon and garlic and macaroni &cheese and mash and gravy. It was a delicious meal. 

The ‘Cocktails tasted great, but they took a while to get there. The Sour Cherry Negroni is a great choice. We ordered Grand Rocker, a decadent dessert.
