Squid Game receives a second season. Hwang Donghyuk’s creator confirms that Netflix’s hit show has been renewed.










Squid Game’s creator, Hwang Donghyuk, has announced that the series will be returning for a second season.

Hwang spoke at the Guild Screening of Squid Game in Hollywood on Monday. Associated Press that the show’s rabid fanbase had left him with ‘no choice’ but to get to work on a second season.

The South Korean drama about a dystopian future has been Netflix’s top-rated series since its September release. It has overtaken Bridgerton as the current champion.

Hwang Donghyuk (pictured at the screening in Hollywood) revealed that Squid Game’s creator, Hwang Donghyuk had told the Associated Press Monday that the Netflix hit series will get a second-season.

Hwang spoke on the red carpet with Lee Jung Jae about the series during the screening, where he was joined by Lee Jung-Jae who plays the role of Gi-hun.

“So, there has been so much pressure and so many demands for a second series. You almost make us feel powerless. Hwang said.

“But I will tell you that there will definitely be a second series. I have it in my head. He continued, “I’m currently in the planning phase.”

While the creator of the show was the original director, the creator confirmed that Lee would still be an important focus for the second season.

“I think it is too soon to know when or how this will happen,” he said in Korean. He said, in Korean, “So, I will promise to you this,” before switching over to English. “Gihun will be back and he’ll do some good for the world.”

Squid Game allows South Koreans to submit applications for an opportunity to be on the mysterious show that offers a $40 million life-changing prize.

After applying, Gi-hun — who is trying to clear up his debts in order to help support his daughter — is whisked away to a secret location where he and other contestants compete in variations on childhood games, but they all learn that the penalty for losing is death.

It has enjoyed a great reception from both critics as well as fans who aren’t turned off by the dark themes. 

While speaking with The Times in October, Hwang suggested that a second season could focus more on the masked antagonist the Front Man, who oversees the games.

To help fans get over the shock of Squid Game’s success, Netflix has added three films by Hwang to its service.

Hwang was more exhausted in September when he had to make another season of Squid Game and still speak with Variety.

‘I don’t have well developed plans for Squid Game 2. It’s very tiring thinking about it,” he stated at that time. However, even if I could do it all by myself, it wouldn’t be easy. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.’

He mentioned earlier in the interview that he was writing a film. However, it is unclear whether the Squid Games news has put the project on hold.
