A stunning castle that has been in the same family for 149 years is on the market for offers over £11.3m. 

Careston Castle, located near Dundee in Scotland, dates back to 13th century. It has many amazing period features, including turrets.

The castle, which is A listed, is located in the heart of the estate. It was built from distinctive red Sandstone. It boasts intricately carved fireplaces and wood panelling.

The castle is four stories high and covers more than 15,000 sq ft. However, the main accommodation is spread over two floors. There are four reception rooms on the first floor and a library. The second floor has six bedrooms and five baths.

The ground floor is currently used mainly as storage. Five ’empty’ rooms are located on the third floor and could be used to create additional bedrooms or for other purposes. 

The property also includes three estate cottages: a farmhouse, two farm cottages, and several outbuildings that could be converted.

Contract farmers have managed large swathes of the farmland, growing vegetables, potatoes, and cereals.

Roe deer stalking is common, as well as partridge shoots and driven pheasants. There are also 1.6 miles of fishing for sea trout and salmon, which is mainly on single banks.

Careston Castle’s original keep, which dates back to the 13th century, was home of Keraldus who was the court officer to Earls of Angus.

The Lairds from Careston adopted the heraldic name Dempster and the estate remained in the Dempster family until 1529.

John Adamson was the son of a whaling Captain and owner of a line of linen works. He bought the castle in 1872 from the Earl de Fife and it has remained in his household ever since.
