Houston House of Horrors: First court appearance for suspect in case against him after he was charged with beating to death his girlfriend’s non-verbal autistic 8-year-old son and leaving him alone in an apartment with his brothers

The boyfriend at center of the Houston House of Horrors trial made his first court appearance Thursday to face a felony murder charge for the beating death of his girlfriend’s 8-year-old son. His skeletal remains, which were discovered in an apartment with the boy’s three remaining brothers, were discovered over the weekend. 

Brian Coulter, 31, was dressed in an orange jumpsuit and led into the courtroom, handcuffed and in shackles. This was his first public appearance since Tuesday’s arrest. 

The judge read the charges against Coulter aloud to the defendant and asked him if he understood them. Coulter repeated the same charge to the judge. 

Coulter was released on Wednesday by the judge. He had not been present at the earlier hearing as he was on a mental hold.

Coulter signed documents preventing him from having any contact with Gloria Williams’ three sons, while he was first appearing.

According to KPRC, Coulter will have to post bond and wear a GPS ankle monitor. He will also be under house arrest. Coulter should avoid contacting Williams.

Prosecutor Andrea Beall, who only handles child fatalities as part of her job, told KPRC this case stands out. 

‘This is the only type of case I deal with, and I will say this particular case is such a gross deviation from what we expect human beings to behave like that it has been very emotional and taxing on the investigators, the DA’s office,,’ she said, ‘and the priority should be making sure that all the surviving children get the help they need.’

Williams, 35, has been charged with injury to a child by omission and tampering with evidence – a human corpse. On Wednesday, a judge set her bond at $900,000. The police found Kendrick’s skeletal remains in an unfurnished Houston home on Sunday. It contained flies, flies and other insects. Kendrick’s three starving brothers, aged 10, 10 and 7, had been living in isolation for months with no blankets and survived on junk food from mom and help from neighbors. 

On Wednesday, authorities claimed that Coulter had punched and kicked Kendrick and caused his death on Thanksgiving Day last year. Williams refused to report him and said she was afraid for her children’s safety and would end up in jail.
