Hutchins also posted a photo of her crew to her Instagram page two days before she was shot.
According to a warrant from the police, the Colt was among three pistols left on a table in Gutierrez-Reed’s possession. Baldwin was handed it by Dave Halls, British assistant director. Halls claimed it was ‘cold’ and did not realize it had been loaded up with live rounds.
Cops say Baldwin was practicing drawing the weapon when it fired – fatally hitting cinematographer Hutchins, 42, and injuring director Joel Souza, 48.

Alec Baldwin (left), shot and killed Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer, on Thursday when he received a prop gun with live ammunition
“He’s supposed check the guns, and he’s responsible”: Panicked 911 calls from Alec Baldwin tragedy reveal that the script supervisor blamed the assistant director for the death of cinematographer. But why did ANY gun have live ammunition?
Audio recordings of 911 calls made in Rust by Alec Baldwin’s crew have revealed desperate attempts to save their colleague and allegations of negligence.
Mamie Mitchell, the film’s script supervisor, called the shots after Baldwin accidentally shot Halyna Hutchins (42), and Joel Souza (48).
The tragedy struck as the group was filming the Western film in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Thursday.
Mitchell, a veteran script supervisor whose credits date back to 1974, calls the assistant director and accuses him of negligence.
Mitchell calls 911 and tells her that she needs an ambulance at Bonanza Creek Ranch. We have had two people accidentally shot at a movie set.
Mitchell is calling to instruct another person to clear the road so that the ambulance can get to the site.
Mitchell is then taken to Santa Fe fire and emergency medical services. He sounds panicked and demands a quick response.
‘Bonanza Creek ranch. Two people were accidentally shot by a prop gun on a movie set.
“We need immediate help. Bonanza Creek ranch. Come on.
Mitchell is then asked by the 911 operators for her details.
Mitchell, who has worked in films like No Country For Old Men and Sicario can be heard saying: “It sounds as if somebody else is calling ambulances.”
“Everybody should be. We need some assistance.
“Our cameraman and our director have been shot.”
She then asks an actor on set: “Are you going to take him on the road?”
The 911 operator asks: “So, was it loaded avec a real gun or not?”
Mitchell replies, “I don’t, I can’t tell you that.” Two injuries were caused by a movie gunshot.
While the phone operator is inputting the details, Mitchell can be heard telling someone else: ‘OK, this f****** AD that yelled at me at lunch asking about revisions, this motherf*****.
“Did he see me lean over my desk, and yell at you?” He’s supposed inspect the guns. He is responsible for the events.
According to a Santa Fe court search warrant, the gun was one among three that Hannah Gutierrez, the film’s armorer, had placed on a cart outside of the wooden structure where a scene was being performed.
Alec Baldwin, left, is seen in tears outside Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office. He accidentally shot and killed Halyna Utchins, right.
Assistant director Dave Halls took the gun from the cart, and brought it into Baldwin. He was unaware that it contained live rounds. Detectives wrote in the application.
It is not known whether Mitchell was referring Halls in the audio.
It was unclear how many rounds had been fired. Gutierrez took out a shell casing from her gun and turned it over to police upon arrival, according to court records.
Mitchell is confused when the 911 operator asks Mitchell how many people were hurt. Mitchell then replies, “No, not, I’m a supervisor of scripts.”
Mitchell answered the operator again. I was sitting there, rehearsing when it went off and I ran. We all went out there, but we doubled over the director and the camerawoman.
She tells another woman: “They are clearing roads. Can you go back? Back in the town, back at the Western camp.
Mitchell is confused and hands the phone to a man.
“Hello?” The man replies, “Hello?”
“Hi, I have a list of questions that I need to ask you.” “If you could answer them as well as possible,” the 911 operator said. ‘Are their alertness levels high?
The man replied, “Yes, they are alert.”
Operator asks if the bleeding is controlled. Man replies: “Let’s check if we can get closer… No.
It is not clear if he is implying that bleeding cannot be controlled or that he is unable to get closer.
He tells the operator that he has one lying down and that they are near gate 1. They also have a van available to transport the ambulances to the exact spot.
After speaking with investigators, Baldwin is seen lying on his back outside the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department.
The woman called back and said: “Hi, my name is Bonanza Creek Ranch. We need two ambulances, not one.
The operator responds: “OK, so now we’re calling someone else and we’ll get two of you up.”
The woman, her voice strained, responds: “OK.” Is that 10 to 15 minutes?
The operator replies, “I don’t know – we’re getting them right away, to you now.”
“What?” What? The woman sounds panicked, as she talks to another person.
“We have two ambulances headed your way.”
“What?” “What?” The woman responds, and then turns to the operator, saying: “OK, thank you.”
Joel Souza, Rust’s director, is seen in November 2019. He was reportedly photographed in the shoulder
Operator replies: “You’re welcomed, bye.”
Mitchell later claimed that she was standing next Hutchins at the time she was shot.
Mitchell said that he ran to 911 and said, “Bring everyone, send everybody.”
“This woman is gone at a young age.” She was an extraordinary, rare and very special woman.
Mitchell said that Mitchell and other crewmembers were attending a private funeral service Friday night in Santa Fe.
Baldwin described the killing of Baldwin as a “tragic accident.”
“There are no words that can express my shock and sadness at the tragic accident that claimed the life of Halyna Houtchins, a wife and mother, and a colleague who we deeply admire,” Baldwin wrote on Twitter. Baldwin posted on Twitter that he was fully cooperating with police investigations.
“My heart breaks for her husband, their son and all those who knew and loved Halyna.
Juan Rios, sheriff’s spokesperson, said that Baldwin was allowed to travel and no charges were immediately filed.
‘He’s a free man,’ Rios said.
Co-stars Jensen Ackles, Swen Temmers and Travis Hammer were also in the scene – numbered 121 – alongside Baldwin’s stunt double Blake Teixeira and stunt coordinator Allan Graf.
Ackles spoke about his weapons training for the film a week before the tragic on-set shooting accident. Ackles, who played Dean Winchester on Supernatural for 15 seasons, shared with a crowd of admirers an anecdote regarding his brief gun training for Rust one week before Baldwin’s tragic shooting accident.
The gun that went off in Alec Baldwin’s hands and claimed Halyna’s life was used for off-set practice by crew members. Sources claim that live ammo, blanks and live ammunition were kept together.
Alec Baldwin was using a Colt pistol that was made between 1873-1892 when the accidental explosion occurred. It is not known who loaded the weapon and why it went off as a replacement crew was brought in the day of the incident (The gun pictured above is a vintage Colt pistol manufactured between 1873-92. While it is not known which gun model was used, Rust is believed to have been made in the 1880s.
The gun that killed the cinematographer on the set of Alec Baldwin’s Rust had been used for target practice by crew members, sources linked to the western film’s production said.
Multiple sources close to Rust confirmed to TMZ, that crew members had been using the Colt pistol for recreational purposes.
Sources claim that crew members would practice target shooting with real bullets. Others believe that a live round from practice sessions made it onto the set.
Another source claimed that live ammunition and blanks were being stored in a similar area on set. This may have been another explanation as to why a bullet was fired from Baldwin’s Colt.
Friday’s search warrant revealed that Hannah Gutierrez Rice, Rust armorer, had placed three prop guns on a cart outside of the filming location. First assistant director Dave Halls then grabbed the Colt from that cart and brought it inside to Baldwin. He was unaware that it was loaded up with live rounds.
“Cold gun!” Halls shouted before handing the gun to Baldwin. Halls shouted, “Cold gun!” before handing Baldwin the gun. The phrase was used to signal to the cast and crew that it was safe to fire at the scene, according to the warrant.
Baldwin, who was filming an Old West-style scene in a church, apparently aimed at the camera and pulled out the trigger. She reportedly accidentally killed Hutchins while filming him and also injured Souza, who stood by her.
Two production sources who worked with GutierrezReed previously said that this was not her first incident on a movie set.
The Daily Beast was told by two sources that Hannah Gutierrez – Reed had allegedly given an 11 year old actress a gun while filming The Old Way, Nicholas Cage’s film. She did not check it properly.
One source said that she loaded the blanks a couple of times and did it in a way that was unsafe.
“She was a little careless with guns, waving it around every so often.”
Sources close to the Rust family claim that the fatal incident that killed Hutchins (42), and injured Souza (48), was caused by production failures from the top.
They also stated that Baldwin was handed the gun by Halls, the assistant director, and that he had told him it was safe.
According to one source, ‘He was supposed to be our last defense and he failed me.’ “He’s not supposed to be looking at that firearm.”
According to a Rust production source, there have been at least two other instances of guns accidentally being discharged by crew members on set prior to Thursday’s tragic incident.
GutierrezReed was described as ‘inexperienced’ and ‘green’ by the source.
Ackles said, “I have a 6 AM call tomorrow to have an important shootout,” in a video that was captured by a fan. They had me pick my weapon, and I was like, “Alright, what gun would it be?” I was like, “I don’t know.” The armorer said, “Do you have gun experience?”
“A little.” She was like, “Okay, so this is how you load it. This is how we verify it and make sure it is safe.”
Jensen’s Supernatural star Jared Padalecki and the crowd both burst into laughter at his on-camera experience.
He continued the story and told the group that the armorer had instructed him to fire some blank rounds in a field.
“So she’s like, “I’ll just stick some blanks in there, and just fire a few rounds towards the hill.
“I walk out, and she’s like, “Just make sure to pull the hammer all of the way back and aim for your target.”
Demonstrating how he did it in training, Jensen said he whipped the gun out of his holster and expertly fired the weapon, leading the armorer to jokingly call him ‘an a**hole’ for pretending like he was inexperienced.
Production notes indicate that the Colt pistol was among several weapons on the set at the time, but it was the only one used in 121 as well as the preceding 118.
Filming was supposed to continue with the scene of Baldwin being thrown in a stagecoach, however, it was halted due to accidents.
Additional scenes featuring Baldwin and Ackles were scheduled for the weekend. However, they have been postponed indefinitely.
Rust was Gutierrez Reed’s second film. Sources said that Rust was her first movie.
According to her LinkedIn page she most recently worked as a videographer for Synth Fire, a California-based media company, as well as as a documentary maker for the City of Flagstaff.
She worked as an armourer at Yellowstone’s film ranch between March 2021 and June 2021. According to the page, she quit three months before Rust began filming.
Gutierrez-Reed was just recently out of Northern Arizona University, where she studied film and creative media between 2017 and 2020.
The daughter of legendary Hollywood armorer Thell Reed, 78, Gutierrez-Reed previously worked on Nicholas Cage movie The Old Way – admitting beforehand that she ‘wasn’t sure’ if she was ready in a podcast interview.
She stated, “I almost refused to take the job because it wasn’t clear if I was ready. But, doing it, it went really well.”
In the podcast interview, she also said that loading blanks into guns was her scariest task because she didn’t know how to do it. She had sought help from her father.
Gutierrez Reed thought the job went smoothly, but sources told the Daily Beast the rookie armorer was unsafe’ and had given a gun for Ryan Kiera Armstrong (11 years old).
According to the source, she was careless with guns, waving it around occasionally. There were times when she was loading blanks and doing so in a way that was unsafe.
The insider added that they had seen her loading a gun on pebble strewn ground – which has the potential to be dangerous – before handing off the gun to Armstrong.
According to the source, she was reloading her gun on the ground, where there were rocks and other debris. “We didn’t see her inspect it, so we don’t know if anything got in the barrel.”
Sources on the Rust team have confirmed that the fatal incident occurred as a result of production failures at the top.
Zak Knight, a pyrotechnics and special effects engineer, told DailyMail.com that Hutchins’s death was due to a “cascade of failures” by many people. Number two is that every person on a movie-set has the right to inspect any weapon before it’s fired. Number three is that there is no reason for anyone to ever be in direct contact with a weapon that is firing.
They claim she didn’t inspect the gun before placing it on a prop table for use.
Several sources from the set have said that Gutierrez-Reed was ‘careless with the guns’ on set

Sources said that Baldwin was handed the gun and told by Halls, assistant director, that it was safe.
One source on set stated that he was supposed to be our last line defense and that he had failed us. “He’s not supposed to be looking at that firearm.”
A Rust production source informed The Daily Beast that there had been at least two instances in which guns were accidentally discharged by other crew members before Thursday’s tragic accident.
Rust crew members claim that there were many complaints against the armorer on set and that at most six ‘fed up’ people had walked off set before Gutierrez-Reed handed Baldwin the gun that killed Hutchins.
The crew complained directly to Dave Hall (named in the search warrant.) Hall was the one who handed Baldwin the gun which killed Hutchins. Hall also said that it was safe and that all discharges had been documented.
“All of us shouted at him, “That better be on production report, these guys irresponsible and shouldn’t be here,” a production source said.
“That should be an automatic ground for termination on a Union Film Set. You should be out. That entire department should have been replaced immediately after the gun went off without anyone being told. Production decided to pay the ultimate price and instead of thinking better of it.
Deadline also quotes an unnamed source that said a gun had gone off “in a log cabin” while someone was holding the gun, days before Hutchins’ shooting.
“A gun had misfired twice in a closed room. They just fired loud pops – a person was just holding it in their hands and it went off,’ they said, apparently referring to unintentional discharges.
A spokesperson for Santa Fe County Sheriff Department stated that the investigation was still active and open. Witnesses are being interviewed and evidence is being collected.
Hutchins’s death is under investigation by the New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety Bureau. They could impose civil penalties even if there are no criminal charges.
Deadline reported that ‘Our state OSHA program’ is investigating this. Rebecca Roose was deputy cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Environment Department.
“The state takes workplace safety very seriously and will diligently investigate this tragic death.”

Baldwin, 62 years old, was filming a scene in Rust when the gun went off at 1.50pm. Hutchins was killed and Joel Souza, 48, was injured. The incident occurred at Bonanza Creek Ranch.
Hutchins was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital by an air ambulance, but was declared dead shortly afterwards.
Souza was taken by ambulance from his home to the Christus St Vincent Regional Medical Center. Although his exact condition remains unknown, Souza has been released.
Will Stewart, Daily Mail’s Moscow correspondent told how Halyna had been for him in mid-2000s.
“This is a devastating and incomprehensible news regarding the death of Halyna Houtchins. After graduating from a local university, she was trained in International Journalism and worked for my news agency from Kyiv during the mid-2000s.
“Halyna” was involved in many stories in British newspapers and magazines. But she showed a special talent to make documentaries. This was her first exposure to film and it helped her become so successful in America.
“At this time, while she was still with us, in 2006 she was Associate Producer on a Discovery Channel documentary on Ukrainian icon Leonid Stanyk called World’s Tallest Man. It was made by British company Wild Pictures.
She was instrumental in making Mr Stadnyk feel at ease participating in the documentary that focused on the difficulties of being extremely tall.
“The film was made by Richard Denton, a leading British director, with Paul Hamann, former Head of Documentaries at BBC, as executive producer. Without her, it wouldn’t have happened.
‘Mr Stadnyk is a shy man who trusted Halyna, after refusing many other film offers. He thanked her later.
‘Pictures in advance of the film show him towering over Halyna’s home in the village Podoliantsy.
“She later went to America with her husband Matt. They achieved great success through her immense talent and creativity as well as her constant determination to learn.
“She once said to my Russian colleagues that she felt like she was a perpetual student of America. But her efforts paid off and she got the success she deserved.
“It is tragic she died in such cruel and inexplicable circumstances while doing the job that she loved.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Matt, their son, and Halyna’s family in Ukraine.
Richard Denton, the producer of Shakespeare Uncovered and many films from the former USSR, stated today that Halyna was the most wonderful person to work alongside.
“She was friendly, helpful, and very kind. She was able to translate interviews and make Leonid’s horse go in the right direction.
“She was totally unpretentious and incredibly professionally.
Her death was’senseless’ and’stupid’.
