After a shootout with police, a gunman who opened fire on a mall in Idaho killed two people and injured four others, including a cop. 

Boise Police Chief Ryan Lee reported at a news conference that the shooting was reported at 1:50 on Monday. There was also a report that one person had been’shot and down’.

Officers arrived and saw someone who matched the description.

Lee stated that there was a brief exchange of gunfire which occurred shortly afterwards, resulting in the officer being injured and the suspect being taken into police custody. He said that investigators believe there was one shooter and that the public is safe.

Police said Monday evening in a press release that the suspect was in critical health at a hospital. The officer who was injured had been treated and released. 

Authorities didn´t release any other information about the victims or the suspect, saying the investigation was ongoing.

Lee stated, “We cannot at the moment speak to any motivation behind this,”

The Boise Towne Square shopping mall is the city´s largest mall.

Lee stated, “I cannot stress enough the trauma this event is for both the community as a whole, as well for those who were witnesses or the families of those involved or themselves,”

After the shooting, many witnesses stood in the drizzle outside Macy’s, one of five large departmental shops at the mall. They waited to be interviewed by police and told they could leave. 

A section of the mall parking lot was filled with police cars, ambulances, fire trucks and other agencies. The investigation was assisted by federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives officers.

A quarter of a mile away officers closed a section of road near a busy intersection in order to investigate a second crime scene connected to the shooting incident. Officers at the second crime site declined to answer questions.

Cheri Gypin of Boise was walking for an hour in the mall with her friend. She claimed she heard several loud bangs and thought that something had fallen from the ceiling.

Then, about 60 people, including families with strollers, ran at them, some shouting that there was a shooter.

Gypin, 60, said, ‘My friend was trying processing it.’ ‘I just looked at her and said, `We´ve got to run.´ So we just ran and kept running until we got to the outer perimeter of the parking lot.’

They made their way back towards their car and were told by police to leave the parking lot.

Lee stated that hospital officials were working with investigators to notify family members of victims and survivors of the shooting.

Lauren McLean, Boise Mayor, asked members of both the media and the public to respect the privacy of the victims and their families as they deal with the trauma from the shooting. She thanked law enforcement officers, first responders, and all those who worked to keep the community secure.

McLean said that “Countless people found themselves into a position they never would or should have expected,” and praised shopkeepers and others who reacted quickly to help those in need. In a difficult and chaotic moment, you showed that you care and were willing to help and care for strangers.
