China hopes to host the 2022 Winter Olympics on schedule and’smoothly,’ Zhao Lijian (foreign ministry spokesperson) stated in a weekly briefing that Tuesday.

Many countries are tightening their borders and adapting their policies to accommodate the new version, as a result.

Omicron is poised to grow and spread as winter approaches its peak. However, the games have been said to be fully planned and will continue as usual.

Zhao stated that he believes the virus will pose a challenge to efforts to control it. However, China’s experience with controlling coronaviruses means that he is confident China can host the Winter Olympics smoothly and without any problems.

Beijing hosts the Games, which will be held from February 4, to February 20, in Beijing. There are no foreign spectators. The Games will also take place without athletes or related personnel. They will be conducted within a closed loop that is subject to COVID-19 daily testing.

China’s ‘zero COVID’ policy has seen some of the most stringent COVID-19 preventive measures in the world.

The nation has stuck to its zero-tolerance approach to handling Covid as other countries started re-opening – at least before omicron arrived. 

China deployed the strongest methods of containment to stem the pandemic’s spread, starting in its early days last year. These included lengthy quarantines and tight lockdowns during flareups.
