John Apter (National Chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales) called for an urgent review of current legislation following the recent spate of attacks.

He stated, “The dangerous, irresponsible, and illegal use of fireworks that we have witnessed cannot be ignored.”

“We witnessed many pitched fights in the streets with fireworks used as a weapon and fired indiscriminately on police officers.

This is not a fun game. It is serious and can lead to serious injuries.

“The current legislation is clearly not appropriate for its purpose. There must be an urgent and comprehensive review that includes the availability of over-the-counter fireworks.

“This violent behavior towards emergency service workers who are doing their job and helping people in crisis is completely unacceptable.

“There must be more severe punishments to send a clear message that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.”
