A 11-year-old girl became pregnant in Bolivia after she was repeatedly raped. Her family opposed abortion and allowed her to undergo an abortion 21 weeks later.
After undergoing Monday’s procedure, the girl is currently in recovery at hospital. Her mother originally refused to undergo it because of pressure from a Catholic organization.
The 61-year old Yapacani resident in Yapacani, a municipality in the east department of Santa Cruz, was responsible for the immunization of the young girl.
Pagina Siete, a local media outlet reported that the plan was initially to perform an abortion on her. However, the mother of the child changed her mind at last minute and stated she would continue with the pregnancy.
Her mother originally supported her daughter’s decision to have an abortion. However, her opinion changed after she was called by a Catholic group and pressured to cancel the procedure, Debate reports.

After having an abortion Monday, an 11-year old girl is currently in recovery at the hospital. Her mother had initially declined to have it because of pressure from Catholic organisations. According to the girl’s 61-year old step-grandfather, she had repeatedly raped her and then impregnated her.
This decision was reportedly against the will of both the doctors and the judicial authorities who advised the termination of the pregnancy. There was a great deal of protest in the country.
After cancelling her abortion several times, her mother changed her mind once more and she finally gave birth to her child, Debate reported Monday, November 8.
The mother’s decision to change her mind isn’t clear.
On Monday, the operation was completed and the little girl was reported as being in stable condition. She is now recovering at hospital.
Jeyson, Bolivia’s Minister to Health and Sports said that “The girl is stable and we have taken all necessary precautions by law to safeguard her right to health and to live a healthy life.”
El Deber reports that the suspect has been taken into custody.
Since February last year, the suspect had taken care of both the 11-year old and the unnamed 15 years-old sister.
Their mother and father (also unnamed) were both bricklayers and cooks in La Paz, according to El Deber.
After the initial ultrasound, doctors determined that the 11-year old was 21 weeks pregnant.
Bolivia is a country where abortion is illegal. However, there are exceptions for cases such as sexual assault or congenital malformations, and when the life of the mother is at risk.

Speaking last month, Women’s House chief, Ana Paola García, said to newspaper EFE the young girl told one of her cousins ‘she felt strange movements in her belly’.
Her mother, an 11-year old girl, was informed by her cousin, and she filed a complaint with the police.
‘She does not want to be a mother,’ García said in October. Garcia stated that ‘what is happening to this animal is a crime.
Her mother added that the victim was also given the first dose of termination medication for pregnancy. “It’s not possible to forcibly force an eleven-year-old girl into a nine-month gestation, that’s torture.
García said there were 39,999 pregnancies of children under 18 in Bolivia in 2020, an average of 109 girls per day.
“This is alarming. Sexual violence still plagues Bolivia, and girls remain the primary victims,” she said.
Bolivian law has allowed abortion since 1970 for cases of alleged sexual assault and rape. It has not been allowed to take place without a court ruling since 2014, when a Constitutional Court decision was made.

The 61-year-old’s alleged attacks supposedly started last May in Yapacani (shown on a map) when the 11-year-old and her 15-year-old sister were living under his care while their parents were earning a living in the country’s capital La Paz
Since then, only a signed document from the victim concerning the procedure to have the abortion performed has been necessary.
The church stated that the only way to fix the situation was to love, support, and save both the child’s lives.
The Church stated that ‘A crime can’t be solved with another crime. Abortion doesn’t remedy rape or give peace-of-mind to consciences.
Eduardo del Castillo, Bolivia’s Minister of Interior said that the baby would need to undergo a psychological evaluation if she wanted to carry on with the pregnancy.
He stated, “Imagine an eleven-year-old girl forced to visit her child or son every day because of rape.” It is not acceptable for us to tolerate such behavior in the country.
“We have to generate the necessary conditions for this pregnancy to be interrupted, if that is what it is called,” he stated at the time.

Bolivian Minister of the Interior, Eduardo del Castillo (pictured) said last month: ‘We cannot tolerate this type of behaviour within our country and we cannot destroy the life of an 11-year-old girl’
The representative of the Yapacaní Children’s Ombudsman, Silvia Suazo, said last month: ‘The girl rejects the baby. Even worse, the girl doesn’t want to even use the word ‘baby.
“She is very anxious and afraid. She wants to continue her education and live her normal life.
Meanwhile, former representative of the Ombudsman in Santa Cruz Hernán Cabrera last month criticised the Church and pro-life groups in Bolivia.
He stated that she was brutally raped. While the Church prays for the protection of the baby’s life, the girl is suffering, and everything in her body hurts.
“Those calling themselves pro-life claim that life can’t be destroyed, but it has already been killed unjustly. He-beast poured violence and blood on her. This is the story of one of the many abusing, raped and pregnant girls.
