A thug who googled “how to poison a child” and then gave a newborn girl prescription drugs was sentenced to more than 25 years in prison.

Jamar Bailey (21), was arrested on suspicion that he wilfully injured a child after the baby became listless and unresponsive in June last year. 

A urine test found sodium valporate in the urine, which is a drug used to treat epilepsy or bipolar disorder. This could have been potentially fatal for the tiny child.

Detectives discovered Bailey was taking medication to treat seizures. A search of Bailey’s property revealed a prescription for Epilim Chrono, which contains sodium valproate.

Officers found evidence of the drug inside the baby’s bottle, and searched his phone for how to poison a child’ and how to kill a baby’. 

The tot survived and police stated that she is now’safeguarded thriving’. However it won’t know until she is older if she has any lasting effects. 

Bailey, from Birmingham, admitted to trying murder in June of this year. He was taken into custody at Birmingham Crown Court Monday. 

Bailey was told by Judge Roderick Henderson that there were two victims. There is the baby you tried killing, but the major aggravating feature in this case is the mother of the other victim.

“That baby was taken from her. She was also suspected of trying to kill her child at a time when she was expecting to bond with her child. [the baby]That was all that was left.

“In my judgment that other aspect, the victim number two, makes it more serious. I will give you a 15% discount because you pleaded late in the day and didn’t realize it until you were cornered.

“There is a high risk of harm to others if you repeat this offence.”

Bailey, who appeared via a video link, was also sentenced to four months for possession of black mamamba with intent and supply. This will run concurrently to his “enormous” prison term.  

Detective Sergeant Kirsty, West Midlands Police’s public safety unit, stated: “The little girl is so fortunate to be alive and that we are really happy that she is doing so well.

‘Bailey was premeditated in her actions and could have easily led to her death.

“Our investigation was complex and relied heavily on medical evidence and the support from partner agencies. So we are satisfied that justice is done.”

Bailey will need to serve two thirds his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
